GF.09 Selection from Tosca [G. Puccini]
Charles Godfrey jun.
Pianoforte arr.
G. Ricordi & Co. London
1900
Artist - A[dolfo] Hohenstein [1854-1928]
Hohenstein here creates one of the most dramatic of music covers, a variation of the poster he created in 1899. Hohenstein, who was artistic director at Ricordi, was a great influence on many of the younger artists employed with the publishing house. He was illustrator as well as set designer and costume designer at La Scala and other theatres. Tosca was premiered in Rome in Jan. 1900, and was first performed in Malta in 1903. This piano selection by Charles Godfrey became part of the repertoire of every opera-loving pianist of the time.
