Ċuqlajta - clapper. Instrument of Holy Week

A different type of clapper used inside churches during Holy Week. This is made of a piece of wood to which a flap is added on either side and attached onto a wooden pivot. Holding it from the top handle insert and rotating the wrist causes the flaps to clap against the central piece of wood.
This is a replica of instruments found in Maltese churches - some dating back to the 18th century.
Similar instruments are to be found in the Cathedral of Mdina, in the Carmelite Friary, Mdina, Church of St Paul and Ta' Giezu in Rabat, Zabbar, Siggiewi parish churches, Gharb parish Gozo, the Franciscans in Rabat Gozo....  http://www.independent.com.mt/articles/2007-04-04/news/grinding-judas-bones-1-171593/
