Max Burkhardt was music critic, teacher, conductor and composer who studied in the Leipzig Conservatory and in 1906 settled in Berlin. The German artist Heinrich Kley first made his name as an illustrator, This cover is typical of the pen and ink style of Kley - powerful and dramatic. Walt Disney loved his drawings and they were of great inspiration for his unforgettable animation of  Fantasia (1940) with its dancing alligators and hippo ballerinas.
