Giulio Ricordi was a remarkable personality. He was capable of recognising the most talented composers and artists of the time and he roped them all into the Ricordi publishing house. Opera transcriptions and arrangements of varying difficulty were much in vogue during this period. Montalti produced several covers for Ricordi - This illustration is dated 1899.
The libretto of Puccini's Tosca, published by Ricordi in 1899, has the same rose theme on its cover, also by Alfredo Montalti.
