RATCHET - ĊUQLAJTA

RATCHET - Ċuqlajta

Malta's different clappers and ratchets associated with Holy Week are all known by the same name 'ċuqlajta'. The hand-twirled wooden ratchet was previously used inside churches but was discarded - probably because it became more and more associated with football. It was also previously used as a sound generator during the carnival period, for messaging and for gas warning alert practice during WW2.   A children's version made from Arundo donax (cane, Maltese qasab) was traditionally made in Gozo.
