BEDBUT - single reed

BEDBUT - bdiebet (plural)

Single reeds can be made from simple vegetation such as oat stalks and wheat stalks, or they can be made of cane (Arundo donax). Children used to learn to make these single reeds (bdiebet) when playing out in the fields. Grain stalks are carefully chosen with a node on one end (blocked), and  an open tube on the other. They are soft enough to be easily pierced beneath the node with a penknife or even with the finger nail. When this small slit  is lifted gently it will run down producing a flap (in Maltese bieba) . When blown through the end closed by a node and with the flap completely in the mouth, the flap will start to vibrate thus producing its sound.  http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20140720/local/Preserving-age-old-musical-traditions.528395#.U8v7xwTk6pg.facebook
